Decorative Overlays - Polishable Toppings

Just about all existing concrete has imperfections in the form of pop outs, divots, discoloration, cracks and many other flaws. Sure these problems can be addressed and repaired and sometimes can be hidden within a decorative design but many times the repairs can look very unattractive and noticeable. Most people think their only recourse would be to rip out the concrete and pour a new slab which can be expensive and time consuming. But if your existing slab is in a good and stable condition, there are other options beside tearing it out. One of these options would be to give your existing concrete surface a complete face lift using a decorative concrete overlay.

Our Services

Polished Concrete

Polished concrete is concrete that has been processed through a series of mechanically ground “polishing/grinding” steps utilizing professional equipment designed for concrete polishing. This process also includes the use of concrete densifier/hardener which penetrates into the concrete and creates a chemical reaction to help harden and dust proof the surface. During concrete polishing the surface is processed through a series of steps (in general a minimum of 6-8 grinding steps of processing is considered polished concrete) utilizing progressively finer grinding tools. The grinding tools are progressive grits of industrial diamonds in a bonded material such as metal/hybrid/resin often referred to as diamond polishing pads.

Concrete is not considered polished before 800 grit, and it is normally finished to either the 800, 1500, or 3000 grit level. Dyes designed for concrete polishing are often applied to add color to polished concrete as well as other options such as scoring, creating radial lines, grids, bands, borders, and other designs.

Grind and Seal

Grind and Seal process is a combination of preparing the surface, repairing any cracks or holes, grinding the concrete smooth, cleaning the surface, and then sealing or installing a coating on top. It is important the concrete is prepped properly, so that the sealer or coating can adhere to the surface.

Micro Toppings and Overlays

Concrete Overlay is a method of covering an existing  surface with a thin, new, layer of specialized concrete. A Decorative Overlay provides the ability to give almost any concrete surface, indoors or out, a complete rejuvenation at a lower cost than removal and replacement of the original concrete. There are multiple options available for achieving any look imaginable with a concrete overlay.

Microtoppings are specialized overlay materials that are designed to be put down in very thin coats. They are used primarily to refresh or encapsulate existing  surfaces that are very sound but may be old and discolored, providing a new layer that allows easy staining and rejuvenation.

Diamond Grinding, Shotblasting and Floor Preparation

Floor Prep and Surface preparation is about getting the concrete substrate ready for the installation of a coating or topping. Floor prep is essential and one of the most important steps needed to insure a quality and long lasting performance of an installation. Proper preparation provides a dry, even and profiled surface free of dirt, dust, oil and grease. Removal of surface contaminants allows primers and repair materials to have direct contact with the substrate, increasing the surface area and roughness of the surface, and providing a substrate that is ready for the installation of a coating or topping.

Shot-blasting is a one-step method for stripping, cleaning and profiling surfaces in preparation for coatings and overlays. Not only does shot-blasting produce a roughened texture that improves adhesion of decorative toppings, they also leave surfaces dry and immediately ready for recoating or resurfacing.

Diamond Grinding is another means of concrete preparation. Diamond Grinding is not only useful to provide a profile to the concrete to accept toppings and coatings, but it can be used for removal or underlayments, thicker adhesives, coatings and toppings. Diamond grinding can also be used to flatten floors, remove lippage and trip hazards.

Polishable and Decorative Toppings

Polishable Toppings allow for a way to achieve a Polished Concrete floor regardless of its condition. Sometimes existing concrete slabs are just not suitable for polishing. Trenches that were previously cut into the existing concrete slab, bolt holes, cracks, divots, patches, existing floor drains or old electrical boxes; make polishing concrete a less than desirable option, when a clean look if desired.

With a Polishable Topping, you will know exactly what you will be getting from the time it is specified to the time its complete –  and the possibilities are endless.

Polishable Toppings can be integrally colored, stained, and seeded with many different kinds of aggregates as well as the installation of saw cuts and/or divider strips to achieve the desired look and appearance.

Stained and Dyed Concrete

Stained Concrete is and art that’s produced by either acid etching the concrete, or using a acetones or waterbased dye. Instead of producing a solid, opaque effect like paint or other solid color coatings, Concrete stain penetrates the prepared concrete to infuse it with luminous, translucent tones that vary depending on the surface they are applied to and the application techniques used.

Epoxy and Resinous Flooring

Epoxy Flooring has been around for a very long time and was mainly used within Industrial and Commercial applications because of its strength, versatility, and durability.

Not only does Epoxy help to create a safe and a clean environment for workers to work in, and for the application and movement of equipment within the warehouse, industrial site, or the commercial building – Epoxy has become so versatile and with new products and application techniques it now allows for greater creativity and artistic designs then any other floor coating available today.

Self Leveling and Underlayments

Self-leveling underlayments are a blend of cement, aggregate and other materials that produce a flowable, fast hardening cementitious underlayment, which can be used to create a smooth, flat and or level floor.

Self-leveling underlayments are generally poured at an average depth of 1/4″ to provide a smooth flat floor for the installation of other floor coverings. They can also be used to level an existing floor and can be poured up to 4″ thick.

Phoenix can provide the service, whether its small areas using barrel mixing,  larger areas utilizing mobile pumps or very areas where the need for a pump truck is required.

Moisture Mitigation

Moisture mitigation systems exist to limit the impact of moisture on installed floors and to reduce the risks of moisture-related problems. This may include water vapor from exterior sources like groundwater, or moisture vapor from a subfloor system itself, such as off-gassing from an insufficiently dry concrete slab.
